Welcome to Alabama, Where People Are Getting Tired of Trump
There is a saying in America that I am sure you know. That saying is, “As Alabama goes, so goes the nation.”
Actually, that is completely made-up. Usually people say that the nation follows California — and lately, Florida too.
But a Republican Primary is happening in Alabama that is truly testing how much pull Trump still has. And if the right candidates(s) emerge victorious, it’ll be a bookend to Trump’s iron-grip on Republican voters. And that’s the headline story on this episode of SSG.
THE DEATH OF THE TRUMP ENDORSEMENT
Here’s why the Alabama GOP Senate Primary is the biggest story in Republican politics this year.
Frontrunner, Rep. Mo Brooks (R), got President Trump’s endorsement early on because he is basically the equivalent of a MAGA-hat wearing jihadi for the Trump family. But Brooks has performed so poorly with voters that Trump revoked his endorsement last week, citing his deeply-held belief that “he [Mo Brooks] went woke.”
Is there anything worse you can say about a Republican politician?
But in the real world, Mo Brooks has been getting nuked by voters because more establishment-friendly candidates Katie Britt and Mike Durant subsequently entered the race and have done a good job of revealing his flaws.
And now, the real race has begun. Here’s how to bet it.
THE ACTION ON PREDICT BOILS DOWN TO…
Rather than bark at you about some polling numbers (polls are fake AF), we brought in a ringer to give you the inside scoop on what’s happening in this Crimson state’s Republican Primary. That ringer is Cameron Smith, who is a political columnist for AL.com and The Tennessean (Alabama and Nashville’s papers of record).
Cameron is a deeply experienced GOP operative and a widely-read analyst of southern politics. In other words, he knows more about this race — and a few others in the South — than your average fake news pundit writing SJW clickbait for Vox.
So basically, you need to follow Mo Brooks and get woke — to what is going down in one of the most interesting and consequential elections of the year — one that might consign Trump’s dominance in Republican politics to the ash heap of history… in the most unlikeliest of places… Alabama.
