Why Ukraine is Putin’ Everything on the Line

Animals,

Cynical headlines make the easiest clickbait, so it’s with a heavy heart that I must announce that Ukraine is absolutely kicking Russia’s ass right now.

This good news is producing a lot of new questions about the war in Ukraine and how it might end (or escalate). According to pundits, some combination of the following are possible:

  • A rapid collapse of the Russian army
  • A massive expansion of combat once new conscripts get to the front
  • A long, endless bloody stalemate

And the DOOMSDAY prediction…

  • Putin might use nuclear weapons in a last-ditch effort to save a war that his forces are losing

Yikes.

We invited JIM DURSO, a defense analyst at The Hill, and an ex-Navy & DoD logistic official, to speak to these points, many of which are bettable on Insight Prediction & Polymarket.

WHY UKRAINE IS PUTIN’ EVERYTHING ON THE LINE

Here’s a sampling of what Jim told us:

When will Ukrainian troops feel the effects of Russia’s mobilization:

“I think it’s going to take a couple weeks.”

How long until there is peace in Ukraine?

“I’d bet on Russia dragging it out through the end of the year.”

How strong is NATO’s resolve?

“I think it may be if Russia can basically hold the line, keep losses at an acceptable level, and just drag this out through winter, you may see enough unrest in Europe that forces the politicians hand to negotiate.”

Will Putin use nuclear weapons?

“I think it’s certainly possible… at some point he [Putin] may feel that he just has no choice.”
